fish prints

Gyotaku

I learned the art form of Gyotaku while working as a galley cook with the Truth Aquatics liveaboard fleet. This is traditional Japanese art form and is used by pressing rice paper on top of a fish that has been covered in ink. This practice dates back to the mid-1800s, used by fishermen to record their catches. The prints encapsulate the fish’s details by showcasing the scales and pattern. It has been used for visual documentation, education, and as an art form.

eat catch print

I use fish prints as a way to continue the animal’s legacy as an a attempt of gratitude for its life force and beauty. I use non toxic paint and wash the paint off so it can be eaten afterwards. I believe in sustainable fishing practices which is why I choose to fish by rod and reel to avoid bycatch. The fish will forever be remembered by its print even after it has been eaten. All of my fish prints are caught by myself or fisherman. I share the proceeds with the fisherman if one of their fish I used for a print has been sold.
